JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Just days after former Ward 3 Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes was sworn in as a Hinds County Supervisor, he endorsed a candidate Sunday afternoon to fill his vacant seat.

LaRita Cooper-Stokes, wife of the newly sworn-in Supervisor, is vying for the post.

Cooper-Stokes said, " I am here today to announce my candidacy for Ward 3.  Ward 3 is the heart of Jackson and I have a heart for the job."

Sheriff Lewis introduces new command staff

Sheriff Lewis introduces new command staff

Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis introduced his command staff Tuesday afternoon. 

The staff has a total of 237 years experience and were picked for their ability to think strategically and contributions to law enforcement. 

Supervisors in the department will have to re-apply for their jobs. 

An audit of the sheriffs department is underway to see if there are ways to trim the budget.

The command staff is:

It’s no secret that the recession has affected public education. Budget problems at the federal, state and local levels have taken a toll on elementary and secondary education around the country.

In the last school year, most school districts nationwide experienced budget cuts. Federal stimulus money helped make up some of the difference, but not all.
